Physical Education
Physical Education is an applied course allowing students to experience the effects and adaptations of exercise on the body. The A level course encompasses Biology, History, Psychology, Physiology and Sociology of Sport. The coursework is not solely based on a student’s ability to perform in a sport but also includes officiating and coaching performances and there will be opportunities for AS level students to obtain a recognised coaching/umpiring qualification. It is however recommended that students are competitively involved in a chosen National Curriculum sport in order to maximise coursework marks. The course also helps to develop valuable research and evaluation skills which will help prepare students for future university assignments.
For those students who are enthused by training for a specific sport, the course will provide them with the knowledge and understanding of how to formulate a training programme, supporting their physiological development whilst also learning the importance of dietary requirements to support their training. Students will also begin to apply the principles of training to their programmes in order to ensure they are training as efficiently as possible.
Sport is one of the fastest growing industries and provides a secure environment in which to study and develop a career. Many universities offer sandwich courses, which allow students to combine Physical Education / Sports Science courses with another subject such as Geography, Biology or English. Students wishing to become, for example, physiotherapists, sport journalists, teachers, sports coaches, psychologists or physiologists, will benefit from studying A level Physical Education.
