Mathematics
A2 level Mathematics
In the Upper Sixth, students complete a further three modules: two Pure units (Core 3 and Core 4) and an Application module (Mechanics 1). You will be entered for Core 3 in January and take exams in the remaining modules in June. You will continue to have separate teachers for the pure and application modules.
A level Further Mathematics
Overwhelmingly, students taking this demanding course find it to be an enjoyable, rewarding and empowering experience. For students who enjoy mathematics, it provides a challenge and a chance to explore new and/or more sophisticated mathematical concepts.
Here you will study both A Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics combined. This is a course for those with a keen interest in mathematics. The course can be extremely rewarding for those students who enjoy the subject and are stimulated by the somewhat faster pace and greater depth in which the material is covered.
Students planning to take degrees with significant mathematical content (Engineering, Sciences, Computing, Finance/Economics, etc. as well as Mathematics itself) will benefit enormously from taking Further Mathematics. Some prestigious university courses will not accept students without Further Mathematics and many others will give a Further Mathematics qualification a preferential offer.
Most students at The Perse take this course together with three other A level subjects – however it is possible to take Mathematics and Further Mathematics together with two other subjects.
Separate teachers cover the Pure, Mechanics and Statistics modules.
At the end of the Lower Sixth you will sit exams in seven modules: Core 1, Core 2, Core 3, Core 4, Mechanics 1, Mechanics 2 and Statistics 1. In the Upper Sixth, you will complete a further three Pure modules (Further Pure 1, Further Pure 2 and Further Pure 3) and three more application modules: Mechanics 3, Mechanics 4 and Statistics 2. You will be entered for modules Further Pure 1 and Mechanics 3 in January and take the remaining four modules in June.
Should you be uncertain about starting this course, you should speak with the head of department but it is worth noting that if you find the pace of this course too much then you can always change to either AS Further or single Mathematics.
