Latin
Latin continues to attract successful students who wish to explore the language as part of their preparation for a Classics degree. However, it is by no means restricted to specialists in Classics. Many students have chosen to further their study of Latin in order to complement their other A levels, be they scientists looking to engage with a language that offers links to the terminology they use, linguists exploring a common strand of the Romance languages, mathematicians attracted by the logical nature of the language or arts students delving further into the material that inspired the work they read or see elsewhere in their studies.
The department is resourced to a very high level with an extensive collection of texts, commentaries and secondary works, allowing students to explore all avenues of Latin literature. The six members of the department bring with them an array of experience and insight, demonstrating a passionate enthusiasm, whether it be for Roman epic or the minutiae of Latin prose composition. Sixth Form classes will be taught by at least two teachers, allowing for the specialisms of those teachers to pervade into student learning.
The flexibility of Latin as an A level allows it to be studied coherently alongside a wide range of subjects and it is regarded in the highest esteem amongst universities and employers. Students who have studied Latin to a high level are regarded as being intellectually curious and able to deal with fine detail. The combination of literary analysis and linguistic study enables a vast range of skills to be developed and applied.
