Trips
Sixth Form historians have the opportunity to take part in a number of tours. These are aimed at broadening their outlook and knowledge as historians rather than being exclusively linked to exam requirements.
Paris Tour (with the French department): an opportunity to sample French culture and learn about key events in French history such as French Absolutism, the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Era, the Paris Commune, the Belle Epoque and the Occupation of Paris during the Second World War. Sites visited include Notre Dame, the Museum of the Middle Ages, the Louvre, the Palace of Versailles, Les Invalides, the Conciergerie Prison and a number of lesser-known but interesting locations.
Berlin Tour (with the German department): an opportunity to study the history of this remarkable city and learn about key events in German history, concentrating on the German Empire, the Weimar and Third Reich period, the division of Berlin in the Cold War and the Re-unification of Germany. Sites visited include the Museum of German History, the Reichstag, the Berlin Underworld, the Museum of German Resistance, the Berlin Wall and the DDR museum.
Poland Tour (with the Religious Studies department): a short tour to Poland which gives the opportunity to visit Auschwitz-Birkenau and the fascinating city of Krakow.
In addition, historians have the opportunity to hear leading historians speak at meetings of the Cambridge branch of the Historical Association, the Cambridge History Forum and in public lectures at Cambridge University. Students are encouraged to go to exhibitions at the Fitzwilliam Museum and the British Museum.
At school
The History Society holds meetings to enable members to share their own historical enthusiasm by giving presentations.
