French
It is important for students to keep their French ticking over in the holidays, particularly during the long summer break.
It is particularly vital to try to listen to a little French almost every day – just 10 or 15 minutes is enough. The following is just a selection taken from the French department’s list of good websites on our sharepoint homepage:
- One of the best radio news internet sites is RFI (Radio France International)
Twice a day RFI produces two news bulletins in simpler French (go to “journal en français facile” on the menu on the left-hand side of the page.). As well as listening to the bulletins, the transcript of the broadcast can be read on-line or downloaded (click on “lire le script”).
- If pictures to accompany the news are preferred, go to http://www.tv5.org/TV5Site/info/actualite_internationale.php
- The following (English) site has lots of listening clips with transcripts and exercises: http://french.about.com/library/listening/bl-listeningindex2.htm
- The BBC site http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/french/tv/ links you to lots of French TV sites.
- The following sites have short videos and clips on a wide range of topical and cultural subjects:

It is important too to read as much French as possible. As well as choosing a French novel or magazine as holiday or bedtime reading, French newspapers can be read online. The following are the official websites for the major ones:
- Le Point
- Le Figaro
- Le Monde
- L'equipe (daily sports newpaper)
- Ados (online French teenage magazine – reading, oral topic)
The following is just a selection of websites that can offer practice and explanations of grammatical points and vocabulary topics. Most of these are interactive offering self-evaluation and answers:
