Trips

A four day cultural trip to Paris open to AS and A2 students is organised for the February half-term. This trip is organised in conjunction with the History department, with separate and combined programmes of visits arranged for the students according to their subject specialisation. The group stays in a hostel in central Paris and visits usually include the Palace of Versailles, the Musée d’Orsay, the Louvre and Notre Dame.

The department is planning to introduce an Easter visit to La Réunion, a French island in the Indian Ocean. Because of the variety of the landscape and the marine life, this trip will be of interest not only to linguists, but also to biologists and geographers. Students will get an opportunity to experience another aspect of French culture and practise their French by spending some time in primary and secondary schools, carrying out surveys and interviewing the local population. Various excursions will be included, including the Piton de la Fournaise, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, and Takamaka, a valley with one of the highest levels of rainfall in the world.

Exchanges

The department is in the process of establishing a link with a Swiss school (Institut Florimont, Geneva) with a view to arranging linguistic exchanges and class links in the future.

At school

We organise an annual French study day, held at the school in February, at which an outside speaker and French national, Richard Pelthier, delivers talks and leads discussions on a number of topics taken from the AS and A2 syllabuses.

Work experience

AS and A2 students are encouraged to arrange a week’s work experience placement during their holidays through an independent travel company.  While students are individually responsible for organising the trip, department staff are available to give help and advice.
