French
At A2 the syllabus combines a stimulating mix of contemporary topics with the more traditional opportunity to study two cultural topics, both on separate literary works.
The A2 topics are:
- The Environment
- Contemporary Social Issues
- The Multi-cultural Society
- Personal Cultural Topic (a novel or a film)
- Whole-class Cultural Topic (a play)
We aim to bring this last topic to life by staging a production of an abridged version of the play, to be performed in front of pupils and parents towards the end of the Michaelmas Term and all of the French A2 students take part.
Both the Unit 4 Oral examination (35 minutes including 20 minutes’ preparation time – 30% of A2) and the Unit 3 Listening, Reading and Writing examination (2½ hours – 70% of A2) are taken in the Summer Term. The written paper includes passages for listening and reading comprehension, translation both from English into French and from French into English, and a critical essay in French on the play studied in class.
Both AS and A2 students are given a French department handbook which gives full information on the syllabus and examinations, as well as detailed advice on how best to tackle the course and the final examinations, and comprehensive lists of recommended websites for independent study. In addition to the textbooks, all students have their own subscription to Authentik, a French magazine with accompanying soundfiles and workbook which includes a wealth of material on contemporary French and world issues adapted from articles from French newspapers and magazines. We also subscribe to the online Kerboodle resource which complements our AS and A2 textbooks
