Biology is a popular A level choice. In 2010 74 students chose to study Biology at AS level while 47 students continued from AS to A2 level.  Set sizes do not increase beyond 14 students per set and this class size provides an environment where students can feel secure to develop their ideas and thoughts through discussion and enhance their practical skills with a good level of teacher interaction. Biology fits in well with a range of different A levels; many of our students wish to pursue a career in Medicine, Dentistry or Veterinary science and will study Biology alongside Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. Arts based students may also choose to study Biology as a fourth option at AS level as they may find it a more accessible science.  Choosing to study Biology at A level does require a secure understanding of work covered at GCSE and candidates should have obtained at least an A grade in GCSE Biology if they wish to study the subject at A level. A good work ethic and commitment to the course is also needed as there is a lot of material to cover.

The A level course is taught by a variety of specialist teachers with differing interests. The aim is to teach the course in a way that develops enquiring and questioning minds.  Students are encouraged to read widely around the specification material and we hope that students will develop their independent learning skills throughout the course to prepare them for university. Practical work is key to success in Biology and it is expected that students will become competent with using microscopes and other biological equipment.
