Tony de Saulles inspires artists

We had a great time on Friday with Tony de Saulles’ visit. His talk was really special, because as he spoke, he actually got all Prep pupils to follow his drawings, inspiring many a budding cartoonist.

Two under-11 and two under-9 teams, consisting of pupils from all year groups, represented the school in the annual Keble School cross-country event in Trent Park, North London recently.

We had a wonderful afternoon with author and illustrator Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell last week. They gave us an insight into the way they work together, as they have for 18 years now, with Paul building the storylines around the images Chris creates.

Prep Writing Competition Summer 09

Mrs Castle has been very busy this week. The shortlists of the prestigious Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Awards have been announced! They acknowledge, respectively, the most outstanding writing and illustration in a book for children and young adults and are highly regarded in the children’s book world.

Lent Term Writing Competition Winners

This term the Year 3 and 4 children were challenged to write and illustrate their own comic strip stories - just like Valerie Thomas and Korky Paul! Further up the school, the Year 5 and 6 pupils’ technological skills were tested with our visual PowerPoint science fiction story competition. Limited to between 12 and 20 slides, the entrants had to include a reference to some kind of ‘promise’.

The Perse Prep's Book of Remembrance

At The Perse Prep we held two special assemblies to mark the 90th Anniversary of the end of the First World War. Lots of the children had family members who had been involved in the First and Second World Wars, and they have produced booklets about their involvement.

An historic event has taken place at the Prep – our girls have played their first netball match. We are delighted to report that they won and they are to be warmly congratulated on their fine success. We were treated to a match report with a difference in Assembly this morning as the girls recounted their victory with the help of pom–poms!

Operation Christmas Child

Thank you to everyone who packed boxes for Operation Christmas Child over the last month. On Tuesday, eighty-eight colourful parcels began the first stage of their journey, to the Upper School, from where they’ll be collected by volunteers from Samaritan’s Purse.

Library News and the Book Fair

Thank you all so much for making the Book Fair such a success last week. Nearly £1200 was spent which gave us lots of books for school, as well as book rewards for the 54 children who took part in the Summer Reading Challenge.
Artist in Residence

Rebecca Harvey, a ceramicist, started work as Artist in Residence this term. She has been working with all pupils & over the coming weeks they will produce work to be displayed in New School. Rebecca will continue her own work whilst she is with us, so Prep pupils will have plenty of opportunities to see her expertise in action in the Art Room. Her presence has had a huge impact on our artistic life & the ceramic work that she has been working on with all our boys and girls is looking stunning.
Harvest Festival (Water Week) Celebration

For our Harvest Festival this year we supported Water Aid, an international charity that aims to overcome poverty by enabling the world's poorest people to gain access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene education (www.wateraid.org/uk).

Year 6 Time Capsules

Year 6 are currently studying Ancient Greece in History. In class they discussed how much of what we know about this period is from the discoveries of archaeologists. Year 6 were then asked to imagine that they buried a time capsule that would stay buried for hundreds of years, before being dug up by a future archaeologist!

The Year 5s had a very successful trip to France last weekend. There were 45 boys in total and we were thrilled to welcome Isa Hajee back for the weekend. The sun shone down on us and there wasn’t a moment wasted.

Pulley Systems: The pupils were asked to design and make a model to transport a Play Mobil figure over a distance of 25cms using a pulley system. The pupils worked in pairs and developed a wide range of individual ideas and designs. During our weekly form times in 3 Aleph we have all sorts of chats and discussions. One of our favourite topics has been animals / pets. Out of one discussion came a request for the form to sponsor a Galapagos tortoise egg! (It turns out to be a hot topic because the Galapagos Conservation Trust is about to launch an Easter campaign asking people to sponsor a Giant Galapagos tortoise egg as an alternative to buying Easter eggs. The annual Prep Christmas Charity Fair, held at the end of last term, certainly launched the run-up to the festive season. Thanks must go to all parents, pupils, staff and friends for their most generous support of the Fair - we raised an amazing £2,700!
Flooded Out!

The Year 3 and 4 production of Flooded Out, a musical based on the story of Noah, was a tremendous success. Enthusiastic singing, excellent acting and a good deal of humour were the hallmarks of the performances which played to audiences of over one hundred and sixty each night. Well done all!
Egyptian Day

Whist yesterdays weather was decidedly British - the atmosphere at School was Egyptian. Year 5 had the most wonderful day learning about this remarkable civilisation and we are enormously grateful to the kind mothers who bedecked themselves in an array of amazing garments and joined in the fun.
