Maths
The School recognises the vital role that Mathematics plays in the education of any pupil. The policy of the school is two fold:
- We aim to apply the strands of Key Stage Two as specified by the National Numeracy Strategy in such a way that all pupils are given the opportunity to attain success at each of the levels 3-5
- We also aim to offer a broader aspect of the subject to meet the demands of the individual student: to develop knowledge, skills, and understanding of the basic concepts, and to promote the enjoyment and the fascination for the subject as a whole
STRUCTURE OF MATHEMATICS WITHIN THE SCHOOL
Each pupil will receive eight lessons of Maths a week. The duration of each lesson will vary between 35 minutes and 40 minutes. From Year 4 the pupils are taught in half class groups for part of the week. Years 5 and 6 are set for Maths but there is scope for movement between the sets. In addition to their classwork they will be expected to complete one 30 minutes - 45 minutes homework a week.
The School currently uses the Nelson Maths 2000 scheme. This is supplemented by material, which has been carefully selected by individual teachers to meet the needs of the pupils. Methods of both teaching and learning vary from practical work outside the classroom to the more formal approach inside the classroom. Pupils will also experience working as individuals, in groups and as a class. ICT is a valuable resource within maths and classes have the ICT suite at their disposal.
Mathematical assessment at The Perse Prep School takes many forms. Much is ongoing and done incidentally by the teacher and pupil alike. However, in the more formal situation pupils will sit mid term tests and end of year exams.
