ICT

Prep ICTInformation Communication Technology (ICT) forms an ever increasing part of our pupils’ lives and the world of work and leisure. Its developments are rapid and continuing. The influence of ICT on our society and its infrastructure cannot be ignored by any school. The Perse Prep School has an evolving programme of computer usage.

We teach all our pupils up to Key Stage 2 of the National Curriculum in ICT and help them to use ICT resources confidently as a tool for learning and investigation. We have developed a curriculum to suit the needs of all our pupils. It is sufficiently flexible to ensure success regardless of aptitude, previous experience, or access to facilities out of school.

Interactive whiteboards are utilised in all classrooms around the school. New developments in hardware and software are constantly monitored to ensure that we maintain standards that are as up to date as possible.

The computers throughout the school are networked so access to all software is available anywhere on the premises. Internet is accessible throughout the school.

The Library system allows current availability of books to be confirmed from any network point in the school. It is run from one of the school servers and all reference books linked to it are bar-coded. A specialist music teacher uses 3 MIDI systems for music technology work with groups of boys in Year 5.

Pupils are NOT allowed to bring discs into school except with the express permission of the ICT co-ordinator. This is essential if we are to protect the School's network and ensure that breaches of copyright do not occur.

Prep ICTFor all classes there is one timetabled lesson for ICT each week centred mainly on developing skills and software knowledge. In Years 3 and 4 activities are subject based. In Years 5 and 6 the focus is primarily on the development of ICT capability, and on individual work on specific activities. In Years 4, 5 and 6 pupils have access to the Internet and are allowed to e-mail some homework topics between school and home. The pupils’ work builds up into individual portfolios of material. In addition subject teachers use the computer room facilities whenever they feel this will enhance the learning process.

Overall, the emphasis is on the application of ICT within the wider framework of school and social life.
