Drama

Each class has one drama lesson a week with the Head of Drama and another teacher. Drama is designed as a four-year course covering a variety of aspects of the subject including mime, improvisation, voice work and performance. The aim of the course is to inspire confidence in the pupils and encourage the skills necessary to perform in front of an audience; be it class, school or parents.

Cross-curricular links with Music, English and History are actively explored, although drama can be readily used in many areas of the curriculum.

In Year 6 the course culminates in a production of a play or musical in which all pupils are given the opportunity to put on make up, dress up and tread the boards!

Other dramatic opportunities exist in the form of extra curricular activities. Playtime is a club open to Year 3 pupils who want to come and play a variety of drama games. Drama workshop is for pupils from Years 4, 5 and 6 and is very much a time for experimenting with costumes and props. Pupils may put on a lunch time production of a play they have been working on. Centre stage is a theatre group open to pupils from Years 4, 5 and 6 who, having passed an audition in the summer term, begin work on a play or musical the following academic year. This is a serious commitment for the pupils who are expected to attend every rehearsal leading up to the production which takes place just before the February half term.

There are increasing opportunities for those more interested in the technical side of drama such as lighting, sound and stage effects.
