Aim

The French department aims to create in its pupils a love of language and an enthusiasm for the cultures of other countries.

Approach

We recognise that with pupils aged 7-11 there is a need to regularly revisit key topics in order to consolidate and extend linguistic skills. It is also important that the teaching style progresses from informal and fun songs and games, suitable for the curriculum content covered in the earlier years, to more formal written tasks with emphasis on grammar and written accuracy, appropriate for older children.

However, it is essential that all activities are planned in way that allows pupils to relax and enjoy using language as much as possible in lessons. In this way they grow in confidence.

What will my child study?

Year 3

Simple everyday vocabulary and basic grammar are introduced through games, songs and conversation so that the children can begin to identify linguistic patterns.

Year 4

The formal course Métro Book 1 is introduced, revising topics at a fairly quick pace and noting grammar formally. Reading and writing skills are given greater emphasis and topics are covered in greater depth. Listening to French on CD with no visual aid is also introduced, as is the formal testing of vocabulary, reading and writing.

Year 5

New topics are introduced and they are linked to familiar topics. Previously learned skills are enhanced and developed. Grammar becomes more advanced and pupils start building their own sentences.

Year 6

Pupils continue to build their vocabulary and knowledge of grammar and start writing at greater length and with greater freedom.
