Year 3 have recently been studying the events surrounding the Easter story in their RE lessons.

To support their learning, each Year 3 class received a visit from current Prep parent Mrs Goodman who brought with her a collection of painted eggs, many of which were decorated with symbolic shapes and colours. Mrs Goodman also retold a Ukrainian folk tale which is said to explain how the first such eggs came to be. Using the folk tale and collection of eggs as inspiration, the children were then able to create their own designs.

Last Wednesday, our Year 4 girls were hosted...

Last Wednesday, our Year 4 girls were hosted by the Perse Girls School. Despite the appalling rain during the week, the sun shone on the U9A Netball team as they prepared for their second ever match. The girls were met by an enormous crowd of opposition supporters at the Perse Girls, as the headmistress and girls braved the showers.

The warm up was executed with precision and focus, and our girls showed the skills and drive of a team to be reckoned with. The Perse Girls had a strong side, but our girls once again demonstrated strong attacking principles and set plays. At half time, our girls were 4-1 in the lead. The girls remained committed, focused and listened carefully to feedback, allowing them to go from strength to strength. The final score of 8-1 was a reflection of their hard work and excellent tactical play.

Year 6 excelled themselves at the end of a very busy and full Lent Term with their stunning performance of Joseph and the Amazing Technicoloured Dreamcoat. Over three nights, all pupils had the chance to shine in principal roles.

The story of Jacob and his sons was sung and danced with great energy and humour, supported by Mrs Richardson and Ms Racine on the piano and with some fantastic drumming from Mr Hudson. As always the pupils performed to a very high standard, showing off not only their many talents but also the team work skills they had developed during rehearsals.

After some early fog the sun shone brilliantly...

After some early fog the sun shone brilliantly for a day of rugby and football against Chesham Prep.

The A team were first into action on the rugby pitch and although they battled well, the opposition's experience and slick handling proved decisive and Chesham were the comfortable winners. The B team played next and their game followed a similar pattern to that of the A team. These games were only 10 minutes each but were followed a 12-a-side game for all to take part in. This proved to be a more even affair and the Perse team was more equal to Chesham in many areas. Tom Baldwin put in some big tackles and Louis de Simone proved an elusive runner. Although the game was lost, The Perse proved to be a tough opponent and did succeed in crossing Chesham's line.

Following lunch, the boys headed to the astro for two football matches. Again, the A team played first and both teams showed high levels of skill on a very bouncy surface. The game was settled by a long shot into the top corner by Chesham but the Perse team was unlucky not to score on several occasions. The Perse B team was the better side in their game but found the Chesham keeper to be fine form, ending the game with a 0-0 draw. This proved to be a very enjoyable day for all involved, and hopefully something which will be repeated in the future.

Prep Year 6 girls hosted Chesham Prep at...

Prep Year 6 girls hosted Chesham Prep at The Upper for a hockey and netball tournament just before the end of the Lent Term. The first sport of the day was hockey and the girls had to cast their minds back to the Michaelmas Term to remember their finely-tuned skills. Chesham are a very strong hockey side but The Perse gave them some tough opposition. It was 2-0 at half time but this did not deter The Perse. The girls came back fighting in the second half and kept Chesham at bay for a while. The final score was 4-0 following some super shots on goal from their strikers. For The Perse, Holly Jones put in a sterling performance as goal keeper, deflecting far more goals than were let in, and was ably supported by TT Owers in defence.

Following this match, the girls were split into three mixed teams. Entering into the mixing spirit, the teams named themselves Chesper, Persham and the Stripy Bananas! The tournament culminated in some tense penalty flicks for 2nd and 3rd place, with Stripy Bananas emerging as the overall winners. Mel West proved extremely handy at outwitting the goalie alongside TT Owers, who scored the deciding flick.

After a hearty lunch the girls were ready to turn their sporting minds to netball. The afternoon began with a match between the two schools which finished in a nail-biting 4-4 draw. Following this match, the girls again split up into mixed teams for a mini netball tournament.

At the end of the day, Chesham presented The Prep with a shield to celebrate the sporting standard of the day, and we hope this will be the start of a long tradition between the two schools.

It was ten days before D‐Day and various abandoned documents, luggage and personal effects were handed to the authorities. Some of these were probably innocent but others pointed to something more sinister. It was Year 6’s job to interrogate the evidence, searching for spies, all the while remembering to ‘keep calm and carry on’. In the afternoon it was all about deciphering and enciphering secret messages being sent between the Allies. The day was an excellent introduction to Year 6’s next history topic: Britain since the 1930s.

On a sunny, warm afternoon in Trent Park, London, 24 Prep pupils took part in the annual Keble Cross Country Championships held at Keble School. This year saw record numbers attend with over 380 pupils taking part representing over 16 schools. We had two boys teams and a girls team representing the school in both the Under 11 (Year 5/6) and Under 9 (Year 3/4) age groups.

In the Under 11 Boys race, we had some pleasing results and although we had no-one in the top three places, James Tee put in a strong performance to come 10th in this category, with Harry Forber not far behind. All of the boys were placed in the top half of the event which is a fantastic achievement and may hopefully give the Prep a top five placing overall, once we have confirmation of the results.

In the Under 11 Girls race, the girls performed fantastically well and an excellent run by Sophie Smart who claimed 8th place overall. This is a wonderful achievement considering she has another year in this age group. The other girls were well placed and we hope their results will ensure a top three place.

In the Under 9 Boys race, Ben Knight displayed a wonderful effort to cross the line and take 1st place. Unfortunately he was then given 2nd place at the prize giving due to another competitor finishing before him but running over the wrong line! Well done Ben on a superb effort. The other boys performed exceptionally well with Rupert Evans placed 10th and we will also be hoping for a top three finish when results are officially published.

In the Under 9 Girls race, we had three Year 4 girls and our first ever Year 3 competitor Alexandra Pitchford. Cross country running can be tough enough, let alone competing against people older than you and in large groups. So it was a fantastic effort for Alex to be there and she even managed a fantastic 12th place! A future star to watch! The other girls also performed brilliantly. Isabel Painter worked tirelessly and pushed all the way to claim a wonderful 3rd place and was closely followed by the sprinting Megan Carmichael and Rosalind Sale in 5th and 6th respectively. This was a brilliant performance by all four girls and they duly took the 1st place in the Under 9 Girls category. This is an exceptional achievement by all involved.

Well done to all competitors on representing the school with great pride and determination.

On Tuesday, our U11 girls were hosted by the Perse Girls School. It was sunny and cool, perfect netballing weather, and the girls were raring to go when we arrived. The A team started steadily, finding their feet in the first quarter and reacquainting themselves with set plays and tactics after the half term break! The game picked up in the second quarter and our very own dynamic duo, Mel West and Emily Aldridge, proved a very effective goal-scoring combination; at half time The Prep were leading 7-2. The third quarter was a little erratic but Helena Hughes-Davies’ cool head and frequent interceptions helped the girls to maintain their lead. The final quarter of the game saw The Prep come into their own, displaying some textbook netball and winning 12-6.

The B team played a strong tactical game from the outset. By half time the girls were leading 4-0 and were feeling buoyant. The Perse Girls scored three goals in the second half of the match but The Prep were unwavering in their desire to maintain their lead. The final score of 6-3 was reflective of the hard work and determination shown by the girls in training over the past few weeks. A super afternoon of netball, well done girls!

Year 4 had a wonderful Tudor time on Tuesday under the watchful eye of ‘Master Alan’ from ‘History Off the Page’. The day included several workshops for everyone including being the alchemist’s apprentices, making soap balls and pomanders, making scent bags, making ink and writing with quill pens, sawing limbs off at the barber surgeon’s stall and dipping candles.

During the afternoon session we experienced a Tudor ‘banquet’ with role-playing of servants, entertainers, nobility and even a dragon!

The scent of ‘Tudor’ lingered in classrooms and the hall courtesy of scent and medicine bags and we are all avidly watching the progress of our pomanders as they dry out in the classroom.
