Reception visit the Botanical Gardens

Reception children enjoyed a fantastic day at the Botanical Gardens, managing to avoid the worst of the wet weather! As they donner their wellies in preparation for the rain, many of the children were very excited about their first outing on the minibuses. The children explored the garden's diverse trees and flowers, collecting a range of natural materials during the nature trail. They also found dens, minibeasts and a whole host of intriguing leaves and twigs which sparked a lot of conversation and debate. The children loved spending time making careful drawings of some of the more exotic plants in the hot houses. The cacti proved a particular highlight as did the giant seed in the middle of the cycas plant in the tropical rainforest. Upon their return to school, both classes were buzzing with chatter about all they had seen whilst trying to supress their yawns as a result of a lot of walking!

Year 2 visit Wicken Fen

Year 2 had lots of watery fun at Wicken Fen last week! Despite the recent run of bad weather, the children enjoyed hunting for minibeasts and studying them up close with magnifying glasses. They even donned special bug spectacles to experience what it is like hunting for food and avoiding predators with the eyesight of a dragonfly. The children all had great fun pond dipping and were amazed at the number of species of creatures that they discovered. The afternoon was then spent in the art room where the children took inpsiration from the minibeasts they had encountered and created some superb clay models.

Pelican Voices

The Pelican Voices choir, made up from children in Year 1 and Year 2, has been selected to sing at the National Festival of Music for Youth. The competition will take place during the first week of July in Birmingham and features groups from all 71 regional festivals.

This is a tremendous achievement in the choir's first year. As well as performing on the day, the children will be able to see other choirs and instruments groups, and possibly take part in musical workshops.

Pelican Voices

On Saturday the Pelican Voices, children from Years 1 and 2, gave their first ever performance to a delighted audience at the regional Music for Youth Festival in Cambridge. They sang a variety of songs clearly, confidently and with obvious enjoyment and the musical mentor who gave them feedback praised their outstanding performance. Well done to everyone who participated and a big thank you to Miss Body for making choir such an enjoyable activity.

Pelican survivors

Earlier this week, children at the Nursery and Pre-Prep were delighted to welcome back pupils from the very first Nursery class at the school. They are now in the Upper Sixth at the Upper and looking forward to life at a range of universities. Everyone had lunch together with special Pelican cakes and then enjoyed a happy playtime. The Sixth Formers were amazed to see all the changes that have occurred at the school over the years and remembered their previous school with fondness.

WOW Day

The children at the Nursery and Pre-Prep celebrated World Orphan Week (WOW!) by coming into school in clothes and/or hairstyles that made each other say WOW! They all brought in a small donation to SOS Children’s Villages who do so much to help orphans throughout the world and raised over £370 – WOW!

Pancakes at The Pelican

Shrove Tuesday traditions were remembered yesterday when pupils at the Nursery and Pre-Prep took part in a pancake race. It was a close run race with the Kingfishers finishing just ahead of the Woodpeckers. Well done to everyone!

Fabulous performances from Year 1

Both Year 1 assemblies have been wonderful this week. Oak Class told the school all about the seasons through poetry, dance and presentations. Pine Class performed an alternative version of Little Red Riding Hood. The children relished their roles and we are grateful to everyone who was able to come and support them.

Fun in the snow

The children at our Nursery and Pre-Prep had a fantastic time playing in the snow. There was even enough snow in the playground to build several lovely snowmen!

Year 1 visit the Folk Museum

On a recent 'Washday' trip to the Folk Museum, Year 1 had lots of fun learning about life in Victorian times. They enjoyed grating carbolic soap, washing clothes in the dolly tub with a posser and then rubbing the clothes on the scrubbing board before finally rinsing. The mangle was called ‘the little nipper’ so they had to be really careful with their fingers. They also learned how to hang clothes with split pegs and tried ironing with flat irons. It was hard work but ‘extraordinarily superb’ (as one child wrote back at school)!
