The festivities took place on the neighbouring Upper School's playing fields. Despite the cold wind and looming clouds the event began with a tasty picnic among family and friends. There were lots of novelty events and everyone -especially the parents – enjoyed taking part.

This year Mrs DeBacker presented the winner’s trophy to the Red Robins. Miss James then presented the Nursery with their trophy for participation.

Parents were treated to a special evening preview of the displays. They perused the galleries to the sound of the Year 7 violin quartet, fresh from reaching the finals of the National Pro Corda Chamber Musicians competition.

The following day the exhibition opened to pupils and Perse staff, many of whom would have liked to take some of the pieces home with them.

The children were justifiably proud of their creations, and after they had eagerly found their own masterpiece they enjoyed looking at the work of all their Pelican friends.

The highlight was a trip to The Raptor Foundation and the Meerkat and Reptile Experience. The children were thrilled to be able to handle reptiles and birds of prey and learnt fascinating facts.

Pelican teachers run the Club Pelican holiday club for pupils for five weeks of the school holidays, organising lots of fun activities and outings for the children.

All children from Reception took part in their delightful telling of the Brothers Grimm fairytale, in which a group of animals en route to a musical future in Bremen encounter, and inadvertently terrify, a band of robbers.

A special mention must go to Kirsty Body, the Pelican’s specialist music teacher, for writing three of the songs.

Each year group chose a book and a dance was created around this story. A professional dancer, fresh from performing in Shrek in the West End, shared his expertise with the children to create unique performances.

Different styles of dancing were explored and the children learnt about how to express emotions and characteristics through their movement.

The quality of the finished dances was very high and the children were loving taking on the roles of pirates, monsters, heroes and villains!

The Pelican have also been raising money for Comic Relief today – with everyone wearing something red to school!

This week Year One put on a fantastic production of ‘Born in a Barn’ with the animals in the stable telling the Nativity story.

The cockerels were worried that the baby was going to put them out of a job (being noisy), the sheep were very worried that they hadn’t tidied up before the arrival of their royal visitor and that their ‘cousins’ from the fields would make a mess. The angels, shepherds, Kings and camels all came to visit and all the animals were very proud that Jesus had been born in their barn.

Amazing speaking, spectacular costumes and wonderful singing sent the audience away feeling like Christmas really had begun!

The story unfolded through a festive ‘I spy’ during which the children took star turns on the microphone, challenging their friends to guess an array of characters from a Christmas donkey to kings and their camels, and of course, Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus.

Angels danced, little lambs were shepherded, maracas shook and xylophones chimed and everyone sang so beautifully that shouts rang out for an encore. The children gladly obliged before returning to the nursery, leaving their audience firmly in the festive spirit.

Every child got to help out in this wonderful tradition.
