The Perse Running the Show!
The Perse had great success in the recent Team Cross Country Competition, with three of the four teams qualifying for the Regional Rounds, two of them as County winners.
A team consists of 4 – 6 runners and there are boys and girls events at Junior (Year 7&8) and Intermediate (Year 9&10) level. For each event all 50 runners race together with the finishing order determining points. The top 4 runners from each school then count towards the team total.
In the Junior Girls event Hannah Lin, Elizabeth Townsend and Claudia Baldelli all finished in the top 10 giving us enough points to finish third overall, and only fractionally behind the top 2.
The Junior Boys event was completely dominated by the Perse with the race quickly developing into a personal duel between Daniel Arbide and Eddie Laing. Arbide ended up winning by 2 seconds with a full 30 second gap to the next runner. With Alistair Minshall and Elijah Price (who did particularly well to be so high up as a Year 7 student) also making the top 10, the Perse were the clear winners, a long way ahead of Comberton Village College.
The Intermediate Boys also won their event with 3 of the runners finishing in the top 10. They were led by Ollie Cantrill who finished 3rd and was only beaten by solo runners not eligible for the team event. Robbie Sewell and a fast-finishing Ciaran Flaherty came in 7th and 8th with Will Louth getting the final points for the school in 12th.
An injury-depleted Intermediate Girls Team did well just to make the start line but didn’t make it through to the regionals after suffering further muscle strains in the race.
The successful teams are now eagerly awaiting the chance to test themselves in the regional competition.
