Go, Go, Gadgets!
Perse pupils recently enjoyed a talk and activity session with Microsoft Cambridge Research, building on the newly-formed link between the school and Microsoft whilst demonstrating the excellent Computer Science opportunities the school offers.
The talk focussed on use of the .NET Gadgeteer, an open-sourse toolkit for building small electronic devices. This was followed by an afternoon hands on session run by Dr Steven Johnston from the University of Southampton, in which students were introduced to the gadgets and taught how to use the kit.
With the emphasis being on rapid prototyping, students working in pairs were quickly able to connect up a digital camera along with a display and switch. It wasn’t long before the students were trying out different functions for themselves, from using a touchscreen to utilising a GSM module for sending text messages.
It was a thoroughly successful event marking the start of the use of .NET Gadgeteer in extra curricular activities at The Perse, such as our National Champion Rocketry society.
